Zeleznik is a modern resort that pulses high pace of urban life of the capital, but at the same time hides many legends from its rich history. Located in the central part of the Cukarica, about 12 kilometers from the center of Belgrade, Zeleznik is one of the oldest settlements. The first traces of settlements dating from the 2nd or 3rd century AD, because during the construction of the factory “Ivo Lola Ribar” in the locality called “Kalemi“ a Roman sarcophagus was found. Since ancient times, famous for its production of iron (zelezo), after which it is named, the settlement is still known as a center of heavy industry. Production of large machines in the specialized factory units is still representing the most important economic branch in Zeleznik. As for the residential part, the brand new resort was built in the east of the factory in the northwest range. There is a health center, post office, market and trade zone, so that housing conditions meet high standards. In the nearby there are Ada Ciganlija and Sava Lake as the biggest Belgrade sports, recreation and entertainment centers. In the downhill of Kosutnjak park there is the Belgrade hippodrome located on the Careva cuprija and was opened just before the start of the First World War. Also, on the outskirts of town there is excursion and hunting place Lipovacka forrest. Zeleznik is also known for sports clubs who play in the highest ranks of competition, such as FK “Cukaricki” and BC “FMP”.When it comes to traffic connections, Zeleznik is located on the main road from Belgrade to the west and southwest Serbia: Sava Highway (M19) and Ibar Highway (M22). Part of the Belgrade bypass after Ostruznica bridge as a link between European routes E70 and E75 is passing the peripheral part of the settlement. Also, shunting station in Zeleznik is one of the strongholds of the new Belgrade railway junction. The city center can be reached with several bus lines (20 minutes max) or by car in ten minutes.
