Serbia is a country of rich history and culture that can be experienced in its picturesque regions. We distinguish five main areas, Vojvodina, Belgrade, Sumadija and Western Serbia, Southern and Eastern Serbia and Kosovo and Metohija, each with its own peculiarities and familiar sights. We undertake a brief overview of the regional division of Serbia from north to south.
Vojvodina is the northern province of Serbia, known for its fertile plains, rich history and multi-ethnic population. The capital of Vojvodina, Novi Sad, is one of the most beautiful cities in Serbia, known for numerous festivals, including Exit, which attracts visitors from all over the world. The province is also valued for its vineyards, with many wineries offering tastings of their products. There is also the mountain Fruska Gora, whose monasteries and natural sights are the most sought-after tourist destinations.
Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, is located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. The city has a rich history dating back to the ancient period; visitors can choose any of the cultural and historical landmarks, such as Kalemegdan, Skadarlija, Knez Mihailova Street and the National Museum. Belgrade is also known for its restaurants, nightlife and lively music scene. The city is undergoing a major housing expansion, especially on the banks of the Sava, where the luxurious Belgrade Waterfront has sprung up. The spring season is the best time for a quintessential Belgrade experience.

Sumadija and Western Serbia occupy the central part of the country. The area is known for its mountains, river valleys and beautiful landscapes. There are numerous historical and religious sites, including the Zica and Studenica monasteries. Kragujevac, as the region’s administrative center, also carries a rich history, but also hosts important sports and cultural events, such as the increasingly popular Arsenal Fest. The Drina River, with its associated lakes and nature parks, offers many opportunities for an active vacation.
Southern and Eastern Serbia include regions and border areas adjacent to Romania, Bulgaria, Albania and North Macedonia. The region is cherished for its rivers and national parks, such as Stara Planina, Golija and Djavolja Varos. It is also recognized as home to cultural and historical monuments, such as Nish Fortress, Manasija Monastery and Felix Romuliana archaeological site. The Djerdap Gorge and Danube cruise are among the top 10 destinations worth visiting.
Kosovo and Metohija are located in the southern part of Serbia and have a complex political and historical dimension. The region is best known for its religious sites, especially the Patriarchate of Pecka, also Visoki Decani and Gracanica monasteries, which entered the UNESCO World Heritage List. The area is famous for its natural landscapes, such as the Shar Mountain National Park, as well as the local gastronomy, which is based on authentic Serbian cuisine.
