Serbia is a place of rich cultural and historical heritage that can be recognized in its numerous monuments and landmarks. The country has a long history that goes back thousands of years. The monuments that survived through different historical periods occupy an important place in its collective memory. On this occasion, we will introduce you to authentic sites that are worth visiting.

 

The Kalemegdan Fortress is the most famous monument in Belgrade and a historical site of great importance. The fortress was built at the confluence of Sava and Danube rivers, where many battles and wars took place over the centuries of Serbian history. Today, the fortress is used as a park and museum; visitors can explore various exhibitions and sculptures, and enjoy the view of the great rivers and the city panorama.

The Petrovaradin Fortress is located in Novi Sad, and is considered one of the largest and most important monuments in Vojvodina. The fortress was built in the 18th century. Nowadays, it functions as a cultural center where many interesting events are organized, the most famous of which is the EXIT festival.

The Golubac Fortress rises above the banks of the Danube, near the town of Golubac, as one of the best-preserved testimonies to the Serbian Middle Ages. The fortress was built in the 14th century as a coastal lookout and the first line of defense against numerous invaders. Today it is a first-rate tourist attraction, with an unforgettable view of the river and the surrounding nature.

Studenica Monastery is one of the most valuable monuments of Serbian medieval culture and a pearl of Serbian spirituality. It is located near Raska, central Serbia, and dates back to the 12th century. The monastery is known for its beautiful frescoes, which are among the best examples of sacred art. Another monastery of extraordinary value is Zicha, near the town of Kraljevo. It originates from the 13th century and for a long time served as the seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

Miroslav’s Gospel is considered the oldest written legacy of Serbian culture. It originates from the 12th century and remains one of the most valuable literary works. This masterpiece of medieval writing and illumination is preserved at the National Museum in Belgrade.

Felix Romuliana is an ancient city located near Gamzigrad, in the country’s east. The complex was built in the 3rd century, and to this day represents the best preserved ancient settlement in Serbia. The modern status of Romuliana is equated to an archaeological site that attracts a large number of tourists and historians.

Oplenac is a first-rate monument of Serbian history, located in Topola, in central Serbia. The mausoleum of the Karadjordjevic dynasty was built on the site where members of the royal family were buried. The estate also houses the church of St. George, known for its priceless interior.

So far, we mentioned only some of the most important monuments that testify to the depths of local history. Each of them has a unique story that takes us back in time and allows us to better understand the culture, history and traditions of the country.
