The Residence of Princess Ljubica is one of the most important buildings in Belgrade and is a cultural and historical monument that attracts a large number of tourists from all over the world. The site is located in the very center of the city, in Kneza Sime Markovica Street, not far from Republic Square and the National Theater.
The property was built in 1830, during the reign of Prince Milos Obrenovic, as a residence for his wife Princess Ljubica. After the expulsion of Obrenovic from Serbia (1842), the building was used by various state institutions for the next 130 years. In the 1970’s, the city administration decided to repurpose the building into a museum. After restoration and reconstruction, the residence became part of the Belgrade City Museum in 1980; in September of the same year, the permanent exhibition “Belgrade house interiors in the 19th century” was opened.
The exhibition consists of premier pieces of fine and applied art that were created during the 19th century as a product of Western European and domestic craft-industrial production. They belonged to representatives of the ruling Obrenovic dynasty and prominent civil families. It also shows the emergence and development of high civil culture, lifestyle and housing in 19th-century Belgrade. The building itself, with its architecture and interior design, was somewhat of a luxury for that time, with typical Balkan and oriental elements.
The residence used to host many distinguished guests. There are two entrances, one for the princess and one for visitors. There is also a large hall for receptions, a dining room, bedrooms, a library and other rooms that were necessary for the ruling household. Let’s not overlook the garden, located in the courtyard of the building. The garden is decorated in a traditional style and presents a small natural heaven in the very center of the city. Trees, fountains, benches and flowers create a convenient place for relaxation and enjoyment.
The residence is significant not only as a cultural and historical monument, but also as a performative space. It hosts various exhibitions, concerts and cultural events, which makes it even more interesting to visitors. Guests can take a tour of this beautiful site, learn more about the history of Belgrade and Serbia, and relax in the beautiful surroundings of the garden. The museum is open for visits throughout the year; the entrance fee is affordable and allows access to all artifacts.
Working hours are every day except Monday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The ticket costs 300 dinars, while for students, pupils and pensioners the ticket price is 150 dinars. For children under the age of 7, admission is free. In the vicinity, there are numerous other sites that are worth exploring. These are the Kalemegdan Fortress, National Museum, Orthodox Cathedral, bohemian Skadarlia and other locations that represent the wealth of Belgrade’s cultural and historical heritage.
