SKADARLIJA – Bohemian corner « Stan Na Dan Beograd

SKADARLIJA. Around the world, in different places, there is a considerable number of streets that witnessed the history of a nation. Attractions that are in those same streets are often a symbol of culture and tradition, which is enshrined in the walls of buildings dating from early periods, kept in museums or reflected in the rituals that are transmitted from generation to generation. Surely you can not walk the impressive streets of Belgrade and not mixing modern and traditional. One such friendly street, enchanting environment in which monuments defy time is Skadarska, favorite to citizens of Belgrade. They call it Skadarlija.

A large number of poems and other artistic expressions that describe a fascination with this traditional street is written. In this corner of bohemianism, located in the urban center of Belgrade, there are still traces of Ottoman rule, a name given by the Albanian town of Shkodra. A friendly gift arrived from Sarajevo in 1989 in the form of Sebilj fountain, which is a replica of the eponymous fountain in Sarajevo Baščaršija. Traditionally, the public fountains, which originally come from the Arab world, built on city squares for passengers, passers-by to freshen up and drink water. Many dawn, famous Serbian painter, poet, playwright and a great bohemian Djura Jaksic met there, and in his honor was erected a monument to the house that bears his name, in which, according to the versatile nature that he possessed the artist, held various exhibitions, literary evenings and concerts.
