Belgrade is a capital with a soul and all who have once visited this beautiful city know exactly what we mean by this. Each of the main streets has a story and history behind its name and many important events that happened right in that place. In the inner area of the City of Belgrade there are over 5,500 streets, 16 plazas and 32 squares. The oldest streets that have retained their original routes are: Vase Čarapića, Kralja Petra, Cara Dušana, Jevrejska, Narodnog fronta, Gavrila Principa, and Karađorđeva Streets. The development of the street network started in 1867, after the Turks had departed, in the territories of the 10 City municipalities, the oldest is the Student Square, and the most famous one is the Republic Square.

If you want to feel the pulse of this city center your first stop needs to be Knez Mihajlova Street. It is a pedestrian zone and shopping center – protected by law as one of the oldest and most valuable monumental complexes of the city, with a large number of representative buildings and urban houses built at the end of 1870s. Historical facts show that in as early as the Roman times there was the center of the Singidunum settlement. During the Turkish rule there were winding streets with mosques, gardens, drinking-fountains The houses have been built there and the most influential and wealthiest families of the commercial and political society of Belgrade have come to live there. In 1870, the city was officially  named – Ulica Kneza Mihaila.

The Republic Square was formed after the demolition of the Stambol Gate in 1866.The Gate had been built by the Austrians at the beginning of the XVIII century as the largest and most beautiful town gate in the old times. It was a spot where the Turks executed their non-Muslim subjects, by impaling them on stakes. It was also the place where during the attack on Belgrade in 1806 in the First Serbian Insurrection, one of the leading Serb military commanders was deadly injured.

Terazije is the most famous square in Belgrade. It started to become an urban feature in the XIX century. If you have an arrangement to meet someone in Belgrade you will usually choose Terazije or Trg Republike as your meeting point.

Another famous square is Slavija. Until the 1880s this square was only a large pool where the inhabitants of Belgrade went hunting wild ducks. The formation of the square started when a well-known businessman from England, bought this land and parcelled it for sale. Today there is a large roundabout there and many modern hotels.
